Injury forces Smith to the sidelines

Test star Steve Smith has been hampered by an elbow injury which has forced him out of the NSW team to take on Victoria this week.

A worsening elbow injury has forced Test star Steve Smith to withdraw from the NSW team that will take on Victoria in the Sheffield Shield match starting Thursday.

Smith first raised the complaint after making a barnstorming century for the Blues in a domestic one-day game last week.

He then turned out for NSW at the SCG, but made scores of just seven ad 13, dismissed controversially in the second innings.

But he has been forced out of the game which was moved from the MCG to Bankstown.

“I have had some pain in my elbow that’s gradually worsened since the Test against India at the SCG and it requires some rest and rehab,” Smith said.
“I am hoping I will be right to travel with the Blues to Adelaide for our games down their next week but we will have to see how it responds to treatment.”
Test quick Mitchell Starc will also miss the match after his father, Paul, sadly lost his battle with cancer.

NSW is already without opener David Warner, who is overcoming a groin issue, while Test fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been rested.

Liam Hatcher and Jason Sangha come into the 13-man squad.
