Man held for extorting money from ex-girlfriend

PUDUCHERRY: Police arrested a 24-year-old man from Tamil Nadu on charges of demanding Rs 50,000 cash and sexual favours from his former girlfriend in Puducherry after receiving her complaint through the child welfare committee (CWC) in the Union territory. The arrested was identified as Karthi, an unemployed youth from Chennai.
Police said the 20-year-old girl, pursuing a degree programme in a private college from Thirubhuvanai in the outskirts of the town joined a WhatsApp group created by her friends a few months ago. A youth identified as Karthi befriended her. They soon became close in the course of time and met in person. They visited tourists places in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu and took a lot of photographs together.
The girl soon broke her relationship with him and started avoiding him. The youth then started threatening her that he will share their photographs online besides sending them to her parents and younger sister if she does not give him money and yield to his sexual favours. The girl went to Koovathur bus stand and gave him Rs 15,000 a couple of months ago.
However, he again started demanding Rs 50,000 cash. It was then the girl decided to tell her parents and seek their help. She along with her father approached the CWC and lodged a complaint.
The CWC forwarded the complaint to the Thirubhuvanai police which booked Karthi under 354-D (stalking), 385 (putting a person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian penal code and arrested him.
