CHENNAI: The Southern Railway will impose a fine of upto Rs 500 on passengers if found without masks at stations and in trains for the next six months.
The move is part of the measures taken by the railways to ensure that passengers follow the Covid-19 norms.
The zone further appealed passengers to also follow other Covid norms while entering the railway premises, during a train journey and while they are in the station
The decision to fine passengers came after the railway board received many complaints.
The board has authorised all Zonal Railway to impose fine upto Rs 500 under Indian Railways (Penalties for activities affecting cleanliness at Railway premises) Rules, 2012, from persons not wearing face mask/cover in railway premises.
The official authorised to collect these fines, include the station master or manager, an officer above the rank of ticket collector of the commercial department or an officer of an equivalent rank of the operating department, RPF officials and any other official who may be subsequently authorised by the Railway administration.
